Sonic RPG Hype

Here's an article discussing the possibly forthcoming yet to be named Sonic RPG:

Interesting read. I like how Sega has decided they're going back to the original sonic, not this stupidly contrived one that was force fed down our throats for the last few years (excluding Sonic:atSR, which is pretty decent, though it's pseudo 3d).

On a related note:

"The best video games in all of humanity" - it's a huge compilation of 'best of' lists from quite a few video game mags.

Under "Other Thoughts" - "Sonic the Hedgehog is not popular. In fact, Sega in general has not left much of a legacy, with no Genesis games making anyone's lists."

Thoughts?

As far as Sonic not being popular, I have to disagree. In fact, most of the people I know personally (in real life) absolutely adore Sonic, especially girl gamers. Sonic isn't very popular in the mainstream game market today, no, because the games suck. We live in a very "now" oriented gaming scene and unfortunately, most gamers, especially the younger ones, don't dig much deeper than "Super Mario Bros." for retro gaming simply because (like music, ect.) they're not exposed to it and they're complacent with what they have.

And I'm shocked to see how many Chrono Triggers and DOOMs there are on those lists (even though they deserve to be there imho,) and disappointed at all the Halo 2s (I own it and it's not horrible, but way overhyped.)

It is actually surprising how well Sonic games have been selling when looking at figures like this;

According to that list the recently released Sonic Heroes game on the PS2 is the 3rd biggest selling sega game ... ever! I guess you need to take into account that the games industry overall has grown since the 90's.
