When in battle, what does that battle percentage thing (or whatever they call it) for

? Seems to come in values of 15. Anyone know?

I believe it effects your chances to hit.

in a bad or good way?

Hmm... it appears I wasn't entirely correct. Refer to the following page:

... That's for SFII, but I believe part one should be the same.

so it actually raises defence of yer char? that's cool...hopefully I read it right, haha.

Yeah, but it also applies to enemy characters as well, in addition to having an impact on movement rates.

it also reduces movement rate, too, as can be seen by standing on the road, count how many spaces you can move on the road, and count how many spaces you can move through the woods.

I thought it only pertained to the distance a character could move in any given direction and that it was directly proportional to the terrain.

I never noticed any difference in defense or anything like that based on land effect.

The distance a character can move in combat over different terrain is actually based on their class/race, not the Land Effect. For example, the centaurs can move very far on certain terrain, but humans can move farther/faster than the centaurs on other terrain.
