I'm wondering if a modchip is compulsory to play backups on a Sega Saturn console...

It's is the better of the two known methods, I'll tell you that. However, there's also the issue with import backups (i.e., games with different region code than that of your Saturn console) which you didn't address; a solution to this is found in the Saturn Utilites section of the Miscellaneous... page.

oh have you heard yamaha has finally made a burner so you can burn the outside edge of disc with diff data than the inside. so you can burn that whole security strip using there proggy. hehehe bye bye mod-chips. :beerchug

no, you can't.

all it does is burn text on it and waste space. looks neat, but is useless. it still can't read or burn the protection of the saturn.
