Saturn swap-disc hangups...
Rynex - Nov 19, 2003
 Rynex Nov 19, 2003
I've got a promblem. I've been using the 'swap-disc' technique since yesterday and I think I've got it down. But it seems that I've been making a lot of coasters seeing as a good few games I've burned don't work, despite the cue sheets I generated. Am I missing something (possibly a custom pregap point)? I have Dragon Force, Dracula X and Sega Touring Car Championship burned, but they all hang on the black 'SEGA' screen. Any ideas?

There are two possibilities that come to mind for me:

1) You're doing a single-swap, and the TOC differences are killing it. Do a double swap.

2) You're doing the original->CD-R swap during/after the bootstrap code read, and the games that work have the same bootloader as the one you're swapping with (this isn't particularly likely, but it's not so far-fetched). The original->CD-R swap should be done just after the laser starts moving back from the outer ring. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, listen to an original boot up. There are two long (3/4ths of a second or so) laser moves roughly 3-5 seconds apart - the first is when the laser moves out to check the security ring, and the second is when it is finished and goes back to boot the game.

1) I have been doing the double-swap, actually and...

2) I've been pretty mindful of this, so I don't particularly think it's my timing (although I could be wrong...)

I've been doing it like this: CD-R->(while laser is moving to bootsector)original->(just before the laser gets back to the center of the disc)CD-R

Here are my cue sheets (if it makes any difference):

original->(just before the laser gets back to the center of the disc)CD-R

I may be misinterpreting this, but that sounds like it might be slightly late. Some Saturn models are pickier than others about the timing. If it was a lot of work to get the timing right, you might want to try spinning the disc up manually when you swap the CD-R back in...

Humm....

1- Power ON your saturn with the cdr inside..

2- When the cdr completely stops already on cdplayer, swap for the original.

3- Press RESET, let saturn read the security ring from the original, then swap for the copy.. just like double-swap's 2nd swap.

I think this method doesn't require a so strict timing on the last swap.

Nevermind

Do you have a model 1 because that is SO not working on my model 2

 IBarracudaI Nov 21, 2003
this works on both models... I usually recommend this for model2's... I've used that when I swapped on my m2.

There are more than two models, and some of them are a huge pain in the ass to swap on. A friend of mine has such a beast, and it took him the better part of an evening to even get a single success. He has the timing down now though...

And yes, it does require that the disc be spun up manually to stay in the timing window. It's all in the wrist.

 IBarracudaI Nov 23, 2003
yes I know that, those later saturns with sanyo cdboards are a pain.... even considering only those, I think there are differences.. I've got some friends with sanyo cdboard saturns and they can swap... I have one of those and i've tried for ages and I just can't get a game to boot... as soon as I lift a cd, it falls to the cdplayer in less than 1/2sec

you fucking rock ..i've been trying to do a double swap on my model 2 21/32 all night long (chips not hear for a few days)...just tried this and first time worked

 IBarracudaI Nov 24, 2003
Nice to hear that

Rynex is having probs though...

 Rynex Nov 30, 2003
:agree It's all good, though... It seems it'll be easier for me to just save up hundreds of dollars and just hunt down those damn-near-impossible-to-find gems!

Saturn game burning has officially wned me

 mal Nov 30, 2003
It's really not that hard.

I'm pretty sure it isn't... I just don't have the time to dedicate to finding out and correcting what I'm doing wrong
