My athlon 64 3500 pc died almost a week ago via overheating due to a defective hsf, the motherboard is also dead. Once I get the computer up and running I will resume work on this site. Sorry about the inconvenience.

defective hsf....or defective install? .

Defective hsf 100%

CPU overheated to about 100C and fried a couple components.

I had something like that happen recently.
For some reason I restarted my PC, which I don't do too often, and it dropped back from a 200MHz FSB to 166MHz. The motherboard reporter said something about the overclock failing which intrigued me. I took the side of my case off to see if anything was amiss and the fan on my heatsink wasn't going.
Fortunately I have one of those big Zalman coolers which (while running hot) was able to cool the CPU passively.
