I think my PowerBook died...

Hey guys, I was just doing stuff on my G3, when I heard a weird scratching sounds from across the room. I turned iTunes off, and heard it coming from my PowerBook. I went over and tried to turn it on, and nothing happened. I figured the battery was dead, due to the 'Book sitting on the floor like that for the last month without any activity. I took it upstairs to my room, and plugged the AC Adaptor in, and it still didn't turn on. I switched batteries (to my old one), and still nothing! Although the LED on the top corner is on, and refuses to turn off no matter what! I'm tempted to try my third battery, which I have not used at all (still in it's box), but I only want to use that when my other two are completey fried.

The 'Book is a 5300cs model. The 'Book itself is about nine years old (August 25, 1995 was it's release), but I've owned it for about two years or so.

I just hope I can get it working again...

I guess we can say your iBook crashed. Too bad it burned as well.

Frankly I'm surprised that it's lasted that long. That model of Powerbook was trouble from day one.

Scratching sounds? That's weird.... the powerbook was off when that was happening? That doesn't make much sense. Have you opened it up and had a looksee?

Maybe the cat was playing with it. You know how they like to scratch stuff.

Yeah I know, but mine was one of the better ones (no plastic chippings, Nimh battery).

Yes, the 'Book was off when it happened...

Now it's up in my room, and the LED will not turn off at all...

rip her open, what do u have to lose? Maybe you have sum weird bugs eating shit in there or sumthin? haha.

Hmm, and I suppose you've tried disconnecting the power and attempting a restart?

 Cloud121 Aug 2, 2004
Yes, I've tried restarting like that.

 it290 Aug 2, 2004
Hmm. I guess I'm just at a loss as to how it could start doing stuff when turned off. And it wasn't plugged into the wall when it started making noises, either? Is there anyway it could have turned itself on?

Also, by LED do you mean the one that's normally on when you're charging the battery? I have a similar Powerbook; not sure if yours has the same LED or not.

 Cloud121 Aug 2, 2004
No, I had turned it off myself the last time I used it. It had been sitting on the floor by my couch for over a month, and it wasn't plugged in either.

The LED I'm talking about is up on the corner of the 'Book, and it only comes on when the 'Book is asleep, which it flashes when it's asleep.

I don't know what's going on....

 it290 Aug 2, 2004
Ah ok, I wasn't sure if that model had a sleep mode or not. I have no idea what's wrong, and I think it's probably screwed, but I'm just curious. So it was actually off at the time, and not just asleep?

 Cloud121 Aug 3, 2004
It was off.

Call Apple. In my experience, they are one of the few companies to have decent tech support over the phone.

 Alexvrb Aug 3, 2004
Sounds like it died in its sleep.

Hm...

I'm still dumbfounded as to how it died. I had a lot of important files on there from the last four years that I wanted to keep...

Maybe.. Just maybe if I try that third battery....

scratching or clicking sound? sounds like maybe just the hdd died.

 Cloud121 Sep 6, 2004
The main question is...

How can it do that when the 'Book is turned OFF?
