Well, it's not really that different when you think about it... plus you can use any news reader instead of going through a web portal (such as Google). Mozilla makes a nice one at that...

except my isp doesn't have newsgroups

Try news.cis.dfn.de..., it's free and well-maintained but understandably doesn't carry any binary groups.
