Ok, ok, so the Al Gore part wasn't strictly true. Anyway, the guy that actually IS credited with being the father of the internet (Tim Berners-Lee) has been awarded US $1.2 million dollars. Story...

Where does that Al Gore "story" about inventing the Internet come from?

At one point, I believe Al Gore claimed to have invented the internet.

He didn't claim that he invented the Internet. In an interview he sort of tried to take some peripheral credit for helping create the conditions that allowed the Internet to come about, and various people misquoted him and quoted him out of context in such a way that made it look like he was claiming credit for the whole thing, and now "Al Gore invented the Internet" has become a household phrase.

edit: More info... on the Gore interview and its mangling.

Incidentally, the guy who typically gets called "Father of the Internet" is Vint Cerf. Berners-Lee is the "Father of the World Wide Web".

Hmm, it looks like this misquoting thing happened again at the beginning of this thread.

Sorry if I tend to use internet up in my speech and writing instead of world wide web.

Tim Berners-Lee receives knighthood

On Friday 16 July, the father of the World Wide Web became Sir Tim Berners-Lee in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The original World Wide Web emerged from a project at the CERN physics institute in Geneva, Switzerland. It was designed to make it easier for scientists to share research papers with links to references. It was originally implemented on a research network that grew into the Internet. For details see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3899723.stm...

This two are related ? Isn't it a bit weird ?

You create something, and you put this something for free on the same something

"net" == "Internet", not "World Wide Web".
