whoa yet ANOTHER shump?

between the Saturn and Dreamcast, Sega is the place to be 2D fighters and 2D shooters

Sweet. Hopefully it'll be a good one, I've had mixed feelings on the newer DC shmups (Ikaruga - awesome, SnS2 - awesome, Psyvariar 2 - pretty good, Border Down - OK). DC has the best fighting library for sure, but I think the PS2 and the Saturn are about tied on the shooter front (if you coun't PSX games as well).

I wish they would try to push the envelope further with these games, try something new in i don't know what, but thats what will bring the other gamers who are tired of the shumps to invest in a copy. also i can see room for improvement in the graphics department, instead of just doing it simply thinking of the naomi, really think of it as a at least somewhat big project and really fine tune the graphics. I think Ikaruga was the only one to do so, but i still say some marginal improvement could be done. and oh yeah, make a very easy difficulty setting also!

what aspects do you then think that new shmups should include then? different play systems? storys?

I dunno, Psyvariar 2 had some really awesome explosions... better than Ikaruga's in some respects, arguably. Although Ikaruga is certainly the more stylistic game.

Personally, I'm getting kind of sick of shmups with complex scoring systems, they tend to detract from the game in a lot of cases. Companies have been adding extraneous stuff in almost every newer game to come out; it hasn't helped with appealing to the mainstream gamers, I'm afraid (but who cares?) ... Ikaruga, although a wonderful game, has this fault. If you want to play for score you pretty much have to follow a predefined path each time you play. I would prefer a return to the types of games we saw in the mid-90's ... say Donpachi or Battle Garegga, where the scoring system is important, but secondary to the main gameplay.

I wanna see a shooter with some RPG elements

kinda like what Guardian Heroes did for beatemups

I suggest you play Radiant Silvergun then, heh.

Well, it's not exactly RPG-like, but it's probably the closest thing you're gonna find in a shooter.. if you play 'Saturn mode' then you can level up your weapons and keep them between games. The only other games I can think of that have anything similar are Mars Matrix for DC (the more points you score, the more extras you can unlock), Deluxe Galaga for Amiga (buy stuff in a shop between rounds), and UN Squadron for SNES. Also in the Mahou series of games (except Kingdom Grandprix, I think), you can find a lot of items like swords and stuff during the levels, but they're mostly for scoring.
