Are Consoles Missing From the Future?

Frank Catalano says full-sized gaming consoles will be the next dinosaur. He argues that handhelds, like the new Nintendo DS and upcoming Sony PSP are the future.

Doubt it, as long as it's such a pain in the ass to do multiplayer on a handheld. Even then, people want to use their HDTVs, Dolby Digital sound systems, etc. Handhelds will never give you as much power for the buck, either.

Also, that article has a pretty silly error... the GBA is equal in power to the NES? I don't think so...

Yeah I'm glad I wasn't the only one that caught that GBA error.

If you read some of the comments you'll see some ideas that a portable could handle being able to be hooked up to a home theatre and such. But yes, I would agree that the author didn't say much about any of that.

I disagree that they will replace home consoles. If this wireless thing takes off (which I'm sure it will), then with a few FPS, "MMORPG" style games, and a slew of Wario Ware clones, will ensure the success of the handhelds, and lead to a larger market....

They may become more widespread, and start carrying genres found more often in PC/console markets, but take over? Not anytime soon. Consoles are like the Borg, they seem to adapt every time you think they're done for. Now, what they end up turning into, might be something of a hybrid. For now, PC and console distinctions will wane. In the future, who knows. They may be like laptops, portable enough for many purposes, but also able to hook up to full size interface devices and screens.

Or maybe nothing like that at all. Maybe they'll make toast while you play World of Whorecraft 3 Expansion 8. Ding.
