A question about RAM carts

I know if you take the lithium battery out of a Saturn, your game saves are erased. So I figured I'd back them up to my secondary RAM, which in this case is an Action Replay cart. Those don't need any type of battery backup, correct? (Like PSX cards, etc?)

Stupid question, I know...just checking to make sure.

Nope, Action Replay carts store saves in their Flash memory, so they don't need any kind of power to maintain the contents.

Whew. Are they considered an "extension" of the system RAM? i.e., If I copied all my game data over to the AR cart, would the games be able to read it directly? Or would I have to copy saves back to the system RAM?

AR-resident saves are invisible to the BIOS backup library, so you'd need to copy them back into the Saturn backup RAM to use them.

Ah well. Better than losing them, at least. Thanks for the help.

Just buy a new battery and switch while the powers on.

Sounds kinda dangerous, better wear rubber gloves.
