wifi newbie

As some of you may know, I'm going back to school this fall.

I'm also planning on buying a newer used laptop.

My school is now getting modern and will have wifi access around campus.

Never done any wireless networking, so I don't know if there is anything I should be aware of.

Should a PIII 500 be fine for having a wifi card?

What OS's support it?

Should be.

This depends heavily on your wireless adapter. Some will run on lots of operating systems, some are only supported on XP/2K, etc. Check the box. And under no circumstances assume that a particular brand/model without official support will work with Linux/BSD/BeOS/etc. even if it is reported working - the manufacturers have a habit of completely changing the design while keeping the same model number.

but 2K should be ok for the most part?

For the most part, 2K should be supported, but I'd still caution against making assumptions. The wi-fi market is quite messy.
