I have finally watched the new version of teenage mutant nija turtles and i have to say i actually like it. I never watched it because i saw how badly they f'd up heman. so what does all the old turtle fans think of the new one?

 Gallstaff May 10, 2004
They tottally raped the turtles.

They tried to make them too cool. Given that's what made the old series awesome - the over-the-top 80's lingo, but now it's just crap.

I'm going to have to humbly disagree with you, Gallstaff.

I think the new cartoon is really an excellent interpretation of TMNT. It is slightly darker than the 80s cartoon, but then, the 80s cartoon was really very clean. This new cartoon is much more faithful to the storyline of the original comic book, which surprised me, as I didn't think anyone even remembered that TMNT was a comic book.

I admittedly haven't read all of the old TMNT comic books, but from what I have read, it was really quite dark. There's lots of swearing and lots of violence. It was a real shock to me, as I first saw these as an impressionable child growing up in the early 90s. Ultimately, I don't think this dark image of the turtles works. The story is about anthromorphic, teenage turtles, who are ninjas! It's an premise that's inherently fun and funny.

What's my point? I think it's that the new cartoon strikes a pleasant balance between the fun TMNT cartoon series of the 80s, with the classic story of their origins. I admire it for not taking the easy way out, and copying the coolest aspects of the original series (read: Technodrome and Krang), but instead tried to create its own identity. Ironically, its more faithful to the classic Turtles than the original 80s cartoon was.

That said, I still don't think I could say that I like it more than the 80s cartoon. And its theme song can't even begin to compare with the classic theme song. Hot damn, that was a cool song.

the new series is a bit more like the comics -- not totally, but a tad.

they do try to edge it more towards "cool", but they did an ok job.

The new theme song outright sucks. They need to get rid of the lyrics completely, except for where they sing "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" at the very beginning.

Other than that, I've been loving the show. I've been taping it every week. And I got the first season DVD box set a couple months ago.

Like reX was saying, it is far more true to Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's original comics. Characters like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Kang were created by the first cartoon's producers, therefore we'll never see them again. Kang was based on the alien race of the Utrom, who are in the new series, in a big way. Shredder died in issue one. Plain and simple, and he never came back. Obviously, they can't have the most recognizable villian die in the first story arc and not return, so they came up with a way to bring him back again and again without resorting to something not inspired by the true comics. And the storylines have kept a focus on mature, adult quality storylines while still clean and safe for the younger audience.

I hate the art style of the new series, computer coloring unless you know what you doing (color theories et al) usually sucks, the black outline gets ultra abrasive and the colors too bright the pastel color range usually works better imo . The same goes for the new Transformers

Do peeps remember the horrible animation of the original series? The new series is pretty good. I like the new theme but it does take a while to get used to. Instead of one being better than the other I think its best to say they are the best for their respective series.

The old TMNT cartoon played like a campy cartoon superheroes while the new one has them in a position similar to that in the first movie, a more serious tone. It reminds me a bit like the Batman cartoon when it aired on FOX.

Shredder in the new series is way more badass than he was in the original series. Plus the whole new series basically goes on a continous arc.

Lastly, poor Baxter. He's always getting kicked around, no matter what series incarnation.

I don't like what they did to April at all though.

Did what to her? She was only a reporter in the other cartoon and the movies, never in the Mirage comics. And if you follow the comics, she and Casey Jones are now Mr. and Mrs.

Baxter Stockman's story is following the comics pretty good too. Donatello has Stockman's brain stashed somewhere.

Gallstaff, are you even old enough to remember the original cartoon?

I remeber the original comics. Those rocked. A friend of mine had a bunch and lent them to me.

 Gallstaff May 11, 2004
I am old enough to remember the series cause they ran well into the mid 1990's.

I mean though, the show is for kids. The kids probably have no idea the thing is even a comic book at all. While I do think that the cartoon is more loyal to the comics, I would reallly like to have seen it more loyal to the old cartoons just because I loved them so much.
