Very cool stuff.

Yep. Media is going to be outrageously expensive for a while. Also, you're pretty much limited to Nero and Roxio for DL support, AFAIK. Granted, I love Nero 5.5, but Nero 6... what were they thinking??

Yup, I will wait for the media to come down in price and more software to support it. DVD +/- R media is finally getting down enough for it to be affordable.

I wonder if current DVD burners are compatible with dual layer discs? Possibly with a firmware upgrade?

It would be nice, but it doesn't really make commercial sense.

Unless you see a happy customer base as being a good thing.

My NEC supposedly just got a an unofficial firmware to support DL

Some burners should have a good enough laser to do it, but I'm not sure how reliable they will be. Also, the quality of the burns may not be outstanding. Depends on the drive, I guess.

Yeah I'm not flashing mine till I hear a good deal of test results.

Hard to test though since there isn't really much media right now.

Yeah, you have to understand that even though Pioneer et. al. demonstrated this type of tech with existing drives using custom firmwares, that just means that it was reliable enough for the demo, where the MTBF can be a few orders of magnitude shorter and nobody will care. Production drives need to be qualified for standard reliability.
