I want to take a still from a movie running in WMP, but every time it turns up black. How do I do it?

The reason that happens is because your player is displaying the video using the video overlay. Either play the movie back using software output, or use video editing software to extract the frame.

Such as Virtual Dub or its buddy, Virtual Dub Mod (better container support). Both are free.

Didn't antime mention a simple way like having two instances of the video open, and using one, the one that wasn't using overlay, to take snaps of?

You can also temporarily turn down the video acceleration in the options to the lowest settings. This removes overlay mode.
