Link... Largest quake in 40 years anywhere in the world. Tsunami killed 22,000+ people and the numbers are still rising. Really sad. My prayers go with them. |

I don't think too many people would miss California, it is the land of fruits and nuts. |
SkankinMonkey | Dec 28, 2004 | |||
Probably not, people are pretty bad about staying in disaster prone areas (see: Florida, Japan, France) |

The death toll is now up to 45,000 and still climbing! |

That's predicted to hit 45,000 but that's still a huge figure. |
Curtis | Dec 28, 2004 | |||
Various news agencies are quoting 60,000 now. Ack. |

You mentioned, Ice, that it was the biggest quake in forty years. Do you happen to know where that other quake happened, and what its toll was? I have a friend who's in Indonesia right now with her family. I'm rather worried. |

It is now expected to surpass 110,000. And Bush thinks $34 million is sufficient? I'm betting he will raise that amount, being as England has plegged almost $100 million. Hell even drug maker Pfizer has pleged more than the US. All in all, I hope some global unity comes out of this. If the world leaders come together and help out, then atleast some good would have come from this horrible disaster. |

That was for initial assistance. What did the UN initially pledge? If you knew how these things worked, you'd know more is on the way. On top of that, look at the total amount the US spent in 2004 on foreign aid. We have, are, and will continue to doll out large sums of cash. |

A couple of before and after pictures of one of the worst hit regions - Banda Aceh. In this region, survivor figures are estimated to be as low as 10%. Truly horrifying. |

Some of you may want to consider donating to the Red Cross... if you REALLY want to help. Even just $5 helps. Imagine if all 290 million people in the United States donated $5. That's a lot of money. |
